Study: CT scan can assess emphysema, bone loss in COPD patients

Japanese researchers were able to gauge the vertebral bone density and severity of emphysema in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease by using CT imaging to determine the percentage of low-attenuation area in the lungs. They said CT screening could be used in managing COPD "not only as a pulmonary disease, but also as a systemic disease" and in devising strategies to reduce fractures linked to osteoporosis.
