The Mt. Vernon Outland Airport in Mt. Vernon, Ill., opened the first Light Sport Aircraft Training Academy in the U.S. The Federal Aviation Administration inaugurated the LSA category in 2005, which allows sport pilots to earn a license with fewer hours of training. "This academy opens the doors for people all over Southern Illinois and even the outer region," said Rich Carney, president of SRT Aviation, which runs the academy.
