States get reprieve on REAL ID deadline

States will get almost 18 additional months to implement the secure drivers' licenses required under REAL ID, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Friday. The original Dec. 31 compliance deadline has been extended to May 11, 2011, easing concerns that residents of 46 non-compliant states could have faced additional airport screening.
