Does eBay's rejection of ads within apps have wider implications?

EBay has announced it will not run ads within its mobile applications next year because they weren't generating enough revenue to make it worth distracting customers. The company is still bullish on mobile, however, having seen a third of transactions coming in some way from mobile devices. Some observers agree that eBay's model was not right for ad support, and caution against drawing wider lessons about in-app ads. "Having advertisements on top of another income model just feels, to many users, wrong," said iOS developer Jeff LaMarche.
