Nielsen figures chart Apple, Google's 2012 smartphone surge

Nielsen issued a report summarizing the U.S. smartphone hardware and software market on Thursday that charts the tremendous growth in sales throughout the year as well as the most popular mobile applications sold for Apple's iOS and Google's Android operating systems. Nielsen noted that Google and Apple accounted for 87% of the smartphone market in the third quarter as smartphones accounted for 56% of all handset sales.
