Houston beefs up security in wake of Katrina student clashes

The Houston Independent School District will add about 30 more part-time police officers at 18 secondary schools starting in January, following the eruption of about a dozen fights this semester between displaced Hurricane Katrina students and local pupils. In addition, the school system will step up random weapon and drug searches and create a five-member team to respond quickly to emergencies within the district.
