East Harlem closes soccer field because of turf lead levels

Thomas Jefferson Park in East Harlem, N.Y., closed its soccer field when park officials detected elevated levels of lead in the synthetic turf. The turf, installed five years ago, uses a cushion of crumb-rubber infill from discarded tires. Park officials tested the turf after elevated lead levels were found in two artificial turf fields in Newark, N.J.
