Ice dams, not heavy snowfall, pose risk to residential roofs, experts say

Homeowners should not worry that heavy snowfall will damage their roofs, experts in Washington state say. Instead, experts say the melting process poses a bigger threat: If the layer of snow closest to an attic melts first, it can freeze in the gutters later and create ice dams. The ice dams can back up and cause roof leaks, experts note.
