Volume of M&A deals plunges 29% from last year

Worldwide activity for mergers and acquisitions slid to $3.28 billion in 2008 -- down 29% from 2007 -- with a record 1,309 deals canceled, according to data provider Dealogic. William Vereker, co-head of investment banking at Nomura, said a combination of market volatility, tight credit and falling earnings means 2009 will probably be even worse.
