Joint Commission updates diagnostic imaging standards

The Joint Commission will require accredited hospitals, critical access hospitals and ambulatory health care organizations that provide diagnostic imaging services to adhere to new standards. The commission specified areas in the revised standards to address quality and safety issues, and these include minimum competency for radiology technologists, documentation of CT radiation dose in the patient's clinical record, management of safety risks in the MRI environment and more. The new standards will take effect on July 1, 2014, and additional requirements will be phased in by 2015.
