Indiana program places student teachers in classroom earlier

Indiana State University's Teachers of Tomorrow Advancing Learning (TOTAL) program gives education students a chance to spend one semester in a classroom, where they begin observing and then gradually take on more responsibility, before they begin student teaching. "They're never responsible for everything," said Beth Whitaker, TOTAL student supervisor. "They're getting their feet wet with teaching and planning and delivering instruction with the support of the coaching teacher who's been trained in a specific coaching model of supervision."
