Index shows highest consumer sentiment in U.S. since September

U.S. consumers were more optimistic this month compared with November, according to the final December reading of the Reuters/University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers. The reading of 72.5 is the highest since September and an increase from 67.4 in November. "Consumers' evaluations of their personal finances improved slightly in December, but the gains still left their overall assessments at quite negative levels," said Richard Curtin, the survey's director.
