ECN touts fiber-optic system for maintaining wind turbines

12/25/2012 | Renewable Energy World

The Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands' Fiber Optic Blade Load Monitoring system aims to efficiently measure data to reduce the costs of wind energy operations and maintenance without the disadvantages that can come with visual inspections, drivetrain monitoring and oil sampling, write L.W.M.M. Rademakers and T.W. Verbruggen of ECN. The fiber-optic system has Bragg gratings for measurement of the strain in turbine blade roots, causing less drifting by the fibers while increasing longevity, they write.
