Scientists develop simple quantum computing mechanism

Four teams of scientists have designed a rudimentary form of quantum computing that could pave the way for more advanced forms capable of processing problems that overwhelm today's ordinary computers. Researchers ran photons through a web of intersecting optical channels and relied on quantum mechanics to determine the probabilities of the photons exiting output ports in different combinations. "The question is, does this give you a first step to doing a hard calculation quantum mechanically, and it looks like it might," said Massachusetts Institute of Technology theoretical computer scientist Scott Aaronson, whose team published its findings in Friday's issue of Science.
