Verizon to pull the plug on pay-to-call 900 numbers in the U.S.

At the end of this year, Verizon will cease billing for 900 numbers in the U.S. Those pay-to-call telephone numbers were popular in the 1990s, this article notes, but their value dwindled because U.S. mobile operators refused to connect calls to those numbers, among other factors. In Canada, however, 900 numbers are seeing greater use because of participation television.
