Major cell carriers to issue public reports on government data requests

Verizon and AT&T announced last week they will begin releasing reports on how often the U.S. government and others request customer data. AT&T says it verifies the legality of the requests before turning over information. "We only provide wireless customer location data in response to a court order except in the rare cases in which an emergency compels us to do so," the company said in a statement.
