High-tech devices boost customer service, sales

Stores spend $34.5 billion annually on technology ranging from behind-the-scenes cables and routers to in-store devices such self-service checkout stations and electronic kiosks, according to a leading industry association. Although technology theoretically offers retailers the opportunity to provide more services with fewer employees, companies say that improved customer service and sales growth are the major goals.
