Governments are stepping up drilling oversight after BP spill

Governments and media in several countries are ramping up oversight of oil and natural gas companies after last year's oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, observers say. ConocoPhillips was criticized by Chinese state media for its response to an offshore spill in June, while Chevron and Transocean executives could face charges in Brazil for a similar incident. Since the Gulf incident, "every spill after that is heightened in terms of media attention and obviously government concern," said energy-investment analyst Allen Brooks.
