Analysis examines transfusion outcomes after myocardial infarction

A meta-analysis of 10 studies linked blood transfusions in patients with acute myocardial infarction and anemia with an increased risk of death and subsequent MI. But limitations in the study mean doctors "should not use the results of this review to justify or limit the use of red blood cells," according to an accompanying editorial in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Researchers said more studies of the risks and benefits were needed.
