Canadian schools' buddy programme supports math, reading

Some elementary-school students in the Vancouver area who struggle in math and reading are getting extra help from local high-school and university students. The new programme called Learning Buddies provides about 150 volunteers to 15 schools, with more school sites to come. "Because it's young adults [teaching], they feel a sense of belonging, a little bit of bonding. They become happier learners, more motivated learners," Renfrew Elementary School teacher Leah Wong said.
