Child maltreatment cases in U.S. decline in 2011

The number of child neglect and abuse victims across all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico totaled 676,569 in 2011, with 42 states reporting fewer cases than in 2010, according to the Child Maltreatment 2011 report. Children age 1 and younger had the highest victimization rates. The most common form of maltreatment was neglect, followed by physical abuse and sexual abuse, researchers said.
