Fla. nuclear plant to serve more homes after upgrades

Upgrades at Florida Power & Light's St. Lucie County nuclear plant in Florida will help the facility generate electricity for 150,000 additional residences as well as increase operational efficiency and reliability, officials said. "The plant reduces the use of fossil fuels by about 6 million barrels of oil a year, or 38 billion cubic feet of natural gas a year, and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 32 million tons through the life of the plant," said Doug Andrews, a spokesman for the utility.
