Natural gas enables U.S. to recapture manufacturing advantage

The availability of cheap natural gas allows U.S. manufacturers to "re-shore" overseas production at a cost advantage, and it could also ease the U.S. trade deficit, according to this analysis. "The boom in gas and unconventional oil extraction may generate a significant number of new jobs. It reduces one of the main cost factors for petrochemical products such as plastic, which could accelerate investment in a broad range of domestic industries," said East-West Center economist Dieter Ernst.
