AVMA requests clarification on DEA controlled-substance rule

In a Dec. 17 letter to the Drug Enforcement Administration, the AVMA asked for a meeting to clarify how the agency is enforcing a regulation that allows veterinarians to transport controlled substances from their principal practice location for use on an "as-needed and random basis" in states where they are registered. The AVMA is seeking clarification on the meaning of "as-needed and random basis" and how the regulation applies to vets whose practices extend across state lines.
