Many physicians experience "compassion fatigue," report finds

Many respondents to Medscape's 2013 Physician Lifestyle Report survey of U.S. physicians reported feeling "compassion fatigue." While the condition is not new, the fiscal, social, cultural and scientific challenges doctors currently face "have left us unable to provide the support necessary to avoid physician burnout, compassion fatigue, demoralization and leaving the field," said Dr. Richard Levin, professor emeritus at New York and McGill universities. Being aware of the problem is the first step toward addressing it, which involves focusing more on self-care.
