Smaller districts try four-day schedules

Schools in some states are experimenting with four-day school weeks as part of an effort to increase morale among students and staff, reduce costs and give teachers extra planning time. One of those states is California, where Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed legislation authorizing some districts to switch to the four-day schedule. Critics of the practice have questioned whether it has academic benefits.
