Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a 23-year-old Nigerian man, was charged over the weekend in connection with a reported attempt to blow up a Northwest Airlines jet that was flying from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day. The Homeland Security Department said the U.S. does not have any information that indicates the reported attempt was part of a larger terrorist plot. Passengers on the Northwest flight said Abdulmutallab appeared to have lighted a device strapped to his body, which caused a small fire. Passengers and crew members quickly put out the fire. The incident prompted President Barack Obama to call for a review of how terrorist watch lists are used to foil attacks.
