First-time U.S. jobless claims decline for a third straight week:

Initial unemployment claims have declined for a third consecutive week, the U.S. Labor Department said. First-time claims numbered 420,000 in the week ending Dec. 18, down from 423,000 the week before. The number needs to drop to less than 400,000 to affect the unemployment rate, economists said.
