Newspaper's gun owner map raises thorny questions

The Journal-News of Westchester, N.Y., published the addresses of gun permit holders in its local area, along with a map. The move raises the question of whether some forms of public data should be published. The effort made the newspaper a target of widespread criticism in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., slayings. "[W]hen we publish private information we should weigh the public's right to know against the potential harm publishing could cause," writes Al Tompkins.
