Tablet activations outpace smartphones on Christmas Day

Christmas Day brought a surge of iOS and Android wireless device activations -- more than 17 million -- with tablets accounting for 51% of that figure, according to Flurry, an application analytical firm that said total activations almost tripled from a year ago. Flurry also found that mobile device owners downloaded 328 million applications on the holiday, a record number and 112% more than a year ago. Also, non-Apple tablets gained on the iPad in popularity, according to Chitika Insights, the research arm of the company's advertising network.
