Tomatoes are long considered vegetables by the Supreme Court

In a 19th century tariff-centered battle over the classification of tomatoes as fruits or vegetables, the U.S. Supreme Court decided to classify the tomato as a vegetable, which meant the importer had to pay the tariff. The decision was based on the cultural role of tomatoes in cooking, noting that they are often served the way vegetables are despite the fact that botanically they are considered fruits.
