Nicholas Negroponte, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, wants to make computers available to even the world's poorest children. After helping to launch the XO computer, priced at $172, he's now promising a touch-screen version that will cost $75. Because the XO-3 will be based on open architecture, he hopes a big PC maker will step in to brand the device. "We don't necessarily need to build it," he says. "We just need to threaten to build it."
