Mathews: PE mandate takes needed time from academics

Proposed legislation intended to promote nutrition and fitness among Washington, D.C., students could harm education by taking needed time away from academics, Washington Post columnist Jay Mathews writes. The Healthy Schools Act calls for elementary-school students to have 30 minutes of physical education daily, rising to 45 minutes for those in middle school. Mathews writes that exercise is good for students, but not at the expense of academics.
