More California biotechs attract Japanese drugmakers

A growing number of Japanese companies are teaming up with biotech firms in California to discover and market new treatments. Japanese drug firms consistently look for a "consensus-based arrangement" that is very different from Western companies' approach to development deals, said Patrick Machado, chief financial officer of Medivation, which recently signed a pact with Astellas Pharma for a prostate cancer drug.
