Washington legislators considering candy tax

Faced with a $2.6 billion budget shortfall, Washington legislators might consider extending the state's 6.5% sales tax to candy and gum over objections of the candy industry, which said such taxes confuse retailers. "Candy is merely a small celebration in life," said Brown & Haley CEO Pierson Clair. "To put a tax on a simple celebration which will yield not a lot of dollars seems rather silly to me."
