Model aims to energize nurses amid hectic shifts

Virginia Mason Hospital & Medical Center in Seattle adopted the Swanson Theory of Caring this summer to boost nurses' energy levels during a stressful shift. Created by Kristen Swanson, dean of the nursing school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the model is designed to improve nurses' relationships as well as provide comfort to patients and families.
