Smoking cessation has rapid benefits for those with coronary heart disease

While the long-term benefits of quitting smoking are well known, new research shows smokers with coronary heart disease who kick the habit can see rapid benefits. The study of 1,000 patients found smoking was strongly associated with the occurrence of a second coronary event within a year of the first event, while smoking cessation was linked to a 40% reduction in the risk of second occurrences.
