Backup tunnel planned for S.F. Bay area water supply

Officials in the San Francisco Bay area have been given the go-ahead for a $250 million project to relieve pressure on the Irvington Tunnel, a vast bottleneck in San Francisco's water supply. The existing tunnel is so vital to the region's water network that it can't be taken out of commission for maintenance. The new project will build a parallel companion tunnel, allowing engineers to close down the existing tunnel for inspection.
