The marriage-equality debate this year entered a "transitional" period in which couples have gained the right to marry in a handful of states but face a long struggle in most others, Jonathan Rauch writes. Although the federal challenge to California's Proposition 8 constitutional marriage ban may not succeed, the case "is one more sign that the same-sex marriage issue has come of age," Rauch writes.
