New body scanners to be as quick as X-rays, companies promise

Full-body scanners could soon be as quick and convenient as metal detectors, USA TODAY reports. Manufacturers are testing devices that scan for plastic explosives and other dangerous items in just seconds. "You don't even stop walking," one executive says of the new machines, in contrast to the current technology, which takes about 30 seconds to complete a full scan. A TSA spokeswoman says the agency expects to order about 300 scanners next year, though some on Capitol Hill continue to oppose the technology due to privacy concerns.
