Encrypted debit card PINs were taken in breach, Target says

Target says encrypted PIN data for debit cards was stolen in the security breach it experienced during the holiday shopping season. The retail chain doesn't hold the key to the encryption, so the encrypted PINs may not be usable, Target said. "What this means is that the 'key' necessary to decrypt that data has never existed within Target's system and could not have been taken during this incident," Target's Molly Snyder said.
