The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 was the result of tests conducted on volunteers who were fed food contaminated with borax, embalming fluid, formaldehyde and other chemicals touted as "preservatives." The tests, conducted over five years, led to the government's first attempt to regulate food additives.
