New study downplays danger of birth defects from methotrexate

French researchers say the risk of birth defects from the drug methotrexate may not be as great as previously believed. High doses of methotrexate can induce abortion, but it also is used in low doses to treat rheumatoid arthritis and other conditions. Previous studies have indicated birth defects could occur among children born to women taking even low doses of the drug.
