New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein have raised $311 million from the private sector by successfully schmoozing wealthy philanthropists and corporate executives. Observers say many donors see the mayor and Klein as kindred "enlightened capitalists" dedicated to a worthy cause.
