Special-education costs are up in Massachusetts district

Special-education costs are up about $600,000 this school year in a Massachusetts district that provides services to more than 200 students with special needs -- about 9% of enrollment. Officials say spending would be higher if students had to attend out-of-district schools to get the services they need. The district has 29 programs for students in special education, including a full-day vocational program for young adults with disabilities and a life-skills program.
