Cargo-plane crashes spur calls for safer transport of lithium batteries

Pilots and safety experts are demanding greater safety precautions for transporting lithium batteries, which are thought to have been a factor in at least two dozen cargo and passenger aircraft fires in recent years, this analysis notes. The International Civil Aviation Organization is implementing a set of stricter standards on Tuesday. "Lithium batteries are becoming a big risk issue," said Air France Chief Operating Officer Alain Bassil.
