Custodians do far more than clean up

Like all good school custodians, Nathaniel Carpenter, 61, keeps trouble at bay, says his school's principal, Pam Greer. From comforting kindergartners crying for their mothers on the first day of school to helping calm down disruptive pupils, Carpenter, who retired this month after 42 years as a custodian in Nashville schools, has been a role model for students.
