Task force reviewed guidelines for RBC transfusion

A joint task force of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma Practice Management Workgroup and the American College of Critical Care Medicine has reviewed a set of evidence-based recommendations for red blood cell transfusion in adult trauma and critical care. The recommendations, which were published in this month's issue of Critical Care Medicine, include indications for RBC transfusion in several patient groups, including those with sepsis, acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome. The guidelines also touch on RBC transfusion risks, alternatives and prevention strategies.
