Total Christmas-week shopping surged 8% this year

Although foot traffic in retail stores fell off a bit, spending by holiday shoppers increased a healthy 8% during Christmas week this year, the research firm ShopperTrak said. The jump came as a welcome relief after severe winter storms in the Northeast led to disappointing sales on the Saturday before Christmas. "As expected, pent-up demand following the snowstorm on Super Saturday (Dec. 19) pushed consumers to spend heavily last week," ShopperTrak co-founder Bill Martin said in a statement.
