I have unsubscribed, but I am still receiving the brief.

If you are still receiving the brief after you have unsubscribed, check to make sure you are not subscribed with another e-mail address or alias. To ensure that the correct address is being unsubscribed, please use the unsubscribe link in the SmartBrief e-mail for best results.

I am subscribed, but I am not receiving the brief (non-AOL users).

Please contact your local network administrator to see if a spam blocker has been installed in your company's servers. Often times, spam blockers misconstrue e-mails from SmartBrief as spam. Inform your network administrator that you are not receiving the SmartBrief and that it is sent every week day from the domain sbml.cc.

I am an AOL user, and I am not receiving the brief.

Some mail servers do not accept e-mail with embedded images or attachments. While the SmartBrief does not include an attachment, it is sent in HTML. If your mail server interprets HTML e-mail as an attachment, it will not allow the SmartBriefs to your inbox. You can still receive the SmartBrief in text format, but you will not have "clickable" links. Please let us know if you would like to switch to the text format.

I'm not sure I'm receiving the right version of SmartBrief.

If you are receiving only headlines in your e-mail, you are receiving the text version of SmartBrief. To switch your format from text to HTML (or from HTML to text), use this link: http://www.smartbrief.com/changeMailFormat.jsp

I don't have a password to access the articles for The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, etc.

SmartBrief provides links to whatever source has the best coverage of a particular event. Occasionally, that means we must link to a source that requires payment. When this is true, an alternative link is almost always provided. When registration is free, you are responsible for registering with these sites individually to access their content.

E-mail Issues

Why is the from address of your e-mail always different?

SmartBrief uses a technique called VERP (variable envelope return path) to track bounces back to the original addresses. Most e-mail clients display the correct address (e.g.: <ascd@smartbrief.com>) but some display the VERP address (e.g.: <bounce-pyDPfLfBLrRY@send.smartbrief.com>). If you see the VERP address, that is a characteristic of your e-mail client, and SmartBrief has no control over how it is displayed.

I am using Macintosh OSX Mail, and the links don't work.

Mac OSX Mail does not recognize the links in our HTML e-mail. This is scheduled to be fixed in later software releases, but Apple has not released a date for those changes. In the meantime, we suggest changing your mail format to "text."

I am using WebTV. When I click on the hyperlinks my browser crashes!

We've found that older WebTV units don't always understand our HTML e-mails and occasionally crash when a hyperlink is accessed. We think this only affects older units, and should not affect the newer MSN TV units. To avoid, please change your mail format to text. (http://www.smartbrief.com/changeMailFormat.jsp)

I started receiving spam shortly after I signed up for a SmartBrief.

SmartBrief does not rent, share or sell subscriber lists to anyone (please see our privacy policy at http://www.smartbrief.com/about/privacy_legal.jsp). It is coincidental that you've started receiving spam. Spammers have a multitude of methods for collecting addresses. But consider the following to track the source: You should read the privacy policies of every site that you give your e-mail address to. Have you posted your e-mail address to a Web forum, e-mail discussion list or used it in an online advertisement? Is your address posted on your company's Web site?

SmartBrief is sending me viruses.

Please be assured that all normal SmartBrief e-mails undergo rigorous QA and verification before being sent. Should you receive an e-mail containing a virus from a smartbrief.com e-mail address, the address has been spoofed by the virus and did not actually come from smartbrief.com.

I am receiving multiple copies of the brief.

SmartBrief's e-mail distribution system will not send more than one unique message to the same e-mail address. If you are receiving two SmartBriefs or dailyLeads every day, please make sure that you are not subscribed under two different e-mail addresses. You can verify your subscription address by looking in the footer of the e-mail message where it says "This SmartBrief was created for..." You can unsubscribe one of the addresses using the Unsubscribe link in the SmartBrief e-mail.

What e-mail servers does SmartBrief send from?

Why the "sbml.cc" domain instead of "smartbrief.com"?

SmartBrief maintains several brand names for its e-mail newsletters (SmartBrief and dailyLead, for example) so a sufficiently generic domain name was needed to avoid confusion among our subscribers.

You're flooding our e-mail server with e-mail.

SmartBrief has the ability to throttle connections on a per domain basis, and we'd be happy to lower the connection speed for your domain. Please send your request to admin@smartbrief.com with the domain name and your full contact info.

What domains should I whitelist?

smartbrief.com
send.smartbrief.com
dailylead.com
sbml.cc

Why do you constantly change your "From:" addresses like spammers?

SmartBrief uses a technique called VERP (variable envelope return path) to assist with the tracking and categorization of bounces. By using VERPs we are able to track bounce backs to the individual subscribers regardless of the content of the bounced message body. This method has been instrumental in keeping our lists clean and reducing both our SMTP overhead as well as the recipients' overhead. The VERP technique is defined in RFC 2821, section 4.4. Please note that the "Return-Path:" header is different than the "From:" header, the address contained in "From:" has been static since May 2003 and should allow you to whitelist our e-mails. Please see the example header below for clarification:

Return-Path: <bounce-pyDPfLfBLrRY@send.smartbrief.com>

From: ASCD SmartBrief <ascd@smartbrief.com>

To: XXX@smartbrief.com

Subject: August 22, 2003 - ASCD SmartBrief

Job Listings FAQ's

How soon will my job listing be in the SmartBrief newsletter?

Your job listing will appear in the next publication of the newsletter, provided that there is space in the "Who's Hiring" template. However, the listing will always be active on the SmartBrief Web site throughout the entire campaign.
